Question: How do I know if my child needs to see a therapist?
Answer: Throughout the stages of child/adolescent development, children will experience challenges, causing emotional distress. When distress becomes overwhelming and begins to negatively impact daily life, your child may benefit from therapy.
Question: Why does the therapist want to meet with the parents for private sessions?
Answer: Caregivers offer a wealth of information regarding their child’s history of development and are a direct influence upon the child’s emotional well-being. Therapists also support parents in understanding their child’s developmental needs and how to effectively foster their child’s emotional growth.
Question: Am I bad parent because my child needs therapy?
Answer: Parenting is one of the most difficult roles a person may encounter. Recognizing when your child needs help that you may not be able to provide as a parent, is a strength. Willing to seek outside support for you and your family is brave and honorable.
Question: I think my child may be nervous about seeing you. What should I say?
Answer: Speak to your child by acknowledging the challenges happening within the home and/or your child. Discuss how you think the both of you need extra support in managing the stress and how therapy can help him or her feel better.
